The Laundry Club has been Amherst’s leading Sustainable, Environmentally Conscious Laundromat for over 30 years!
The biggest investment a laundromat can make to be eco-friendly is in the store’s machines, and newer is better! The energy and water efficiency standards for today’s new machines are much more stringent than even a decade ago. Our new Speed Queen Horizon Double Load washers use 12.8 gallons of water compared with 36 gallons used in the old top loading washers they replaced. The double loaders work great and we do still offer a few top load machines that are greatly more water efficient than the old ones. We have committed to continuously investing in new energy efficient, water saving machines and store lighting to better serve our customers and the environment. Because laundromats use a lot of water, you can’t call yourself an environmentally conscious laundromat unless your machines are water efficient.
We sell BioKleen Laundry Detergent and use it in our wash/dry/fold laundry upon request. Biokleen is a non-toxic, plant-based laundry detergent which contains no Phosphate, chlorine, ammonia, petroleum solvents, butyl, or glycol ether. We love BioKleen because of their commitment to sustainability, community/environmental improvement programs and minimizing their impact on the earth. For our chemically-sensitive customers, we’ve set aside a double load washer exclusively for free and clear detergent users with no fabric softener or bleach. And we only use single-use dryer sheets when requested.
The Laundry Club takes pride in our longstanding commitment to recycling. We recycle plastic laundry detergent containers, as well as plastic, aluminum, and glass drink containers, paper, and cardboard. And be sure to bring in your old plastic wash/dry/fold bags, plastic dry cleaning wrap and hangers, because we will recycle those for you too!
